A Chinese Wonder Book Norman Hinsdale Pitman 9781484894057 Books

For a "Wonder Book" this volume was very bland. There were one or two stories that I somewhat enjoyed, while the rest I just sort of endured because they weren't bad enough to stop reading.

Themes include filial piety, being nice to beggars, Filial Piety, and...realistic-feeling dreams. Oh, also FILIAL PIETY.

Because of subtle Euro-centrism and racism, and less-subtle concepts like multiple wives and selling children, this book is most suited to teens or older. Although it's so terribly dull I don't know why they'd read it.

There are no illustrations.

Contains the following stories:

The Golden Beetle or Why the Dog Hates the Cat
The Great Bell
The Strange Tale of Doctor Dog
How Footbinding Started
The Talking Fish
Bamboo and the Turtle
The Mad Goose and the Tiger Forest
The Nodding Tiger
The Princess Kwan-Yin
The Two Jugglers
The Phantom Vessel
The Wooden Tablet
The Golden Nugget
The Man Who Would Not Scold
Lu-San, Daughter of Heaven

A Chinese Wonder Book Norman Hinsdale Pitman

I have always been fascinated with Asian folk tales. This is an excellent example of the genre. The book contains a good mixture of happy, sad, love, hate, fun, mystery and delightful stories. If you like the type you will love this book
did not read it
This is just my opnion but I really didnt like the book and uninstalled it. But everyone is different and has different reading choices
A great story book. Interesting
This book was full out good stories about fairies, fish, fantasies and familial love . I enjoyed reading the stories.
My 6 year old son loved hearing these stories. I am entirely ok with him hearing them. But the cautious parent should be aware that this book does discuss Other gods, murder and death, and the beginning of foot binding. That last one was real fun to explain. Overall we enjoyed the book and there weren't any major technical errors.
I'm so glad this book was made into an ebook via the Gutenberg Project. These classic tales are definitely tales of wonder about classical Chinese traditions and proverbs that will entertain you and your children. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to expose their children or themselves to storytelling via Chinese culture. Plus it's free, can't beat that!
